HOW TO KEEP YOUR RABBIT COOL IN THE HOT WEATHER

During the very hot weather, we drink lots of cold drinks, get into a swimming pool or turn the air conditioning on, for rabbits they also need help to stay cool especially. Rabbits do not sweat through their skin like humans or by panting like a dog would, rabbits lose heat through their ears!! Rabbits can actually die from being overheated and it is therefore very important that you constantly check your bunny throughout the day.

How Can I Keep My Rabbit Cool?

1. Make sure your rabbit has plenty of cold water ensuring its water bottle is constantly kept topped up, add ice cubes to keep the water cold.

2. Keep your pet rabbit out of the sun, whether your rabbit is housed inside or outside it is very important that they have shade to keep cool.

3. As rabbits control their body temperature by losing the heat through their ears, you can mist their ears.

4. Place a fan near your rabbits cage or hutch, make sure it is not to close as you dont want to cause the rabbit to freeze. Please make sure that your rabbit cannot reach the wire and chew it!!.

5. Groom your rabbit to remove any excess fur, if you have a long haired rabbit, maybe give them a haircut for the summer months.

6. Feed your rabbit plenty of vegetables to keep them hydrated in the summer months.

7.  Freeze a water bottle and place in the cage/hutch so your rabbit can lie against it to keep cool.

8. Lay some ceramic tiles down in the rabbits house so they can lie out on them. You could even freeze them for a while to make them even colder!!
